Report of the UW Digital Collections (UWDC)

Advisory Committee

April 1, 2003

Background

As recommended by the Task Force on Strategic Directions for Digitizing UW Library Collections and accepted by the Council of UW Libraries (CUWL) at its meeting on April 27, 2001, Ed Meachen, associate vice president, UWS OLIT and Paul Moriarty, 2001 - 2002 chair of CUWL formed the UW Digital Collections Advisory Committee on August 3, 2001. The committee has issued five previous reports to CUWL on October 1, 2001, January 29, 2002, May 1, 2002, November 12, 2002 and February 3, 2003.

Rima Apple (faculty representative, UW Madison), Ewa Barczyk (associate library director, UW Milwaukee), Lorie Docken (UW System OLIT), Michael Edmonds (WHS), Laura Jacobs (librarian, UW Superior), James Oberly (faculty representative, UW Eau Claire), Nolan Pope (UWDC Center, UW Madison), Joshua Ranger (UW System Archives Council, UW Oshkosh), and Patrick Wilkinson, chair (CUWL, UW Oshkosh).

Activities Since February 3, 2003

1. The committee held a teleconference on February 14.

a. It reviewed and made decisions on several proposals.

i. The committee requested MoUs on the American Suzuki Institute, Taylor Brothers Photographs and the Wisconsin Land Use Maps/Bordner Survey. It made comments on how to strengthen proposals.

ii. The committee raised questions about two proposals. A campus history proposal and a project on “OP” university press publications.

b. It reviewed the status of current projects.

c. And, it arranged a meeting in Madison for April 18 to make decisions on the organization of the UWDC web site and to consider how to integrate UWDC projects with projects done by individual campuses.

2. The committee encouraged the submittal of proposals.

a. It sent an email to the CUWL list with an attachment explaining types of projects that could be submitted and how to submit a proposal.

b. Gorman, Ranger and Wilkinson will give a presentation at WAAL on April 3 explaining the UWDC and promoting proposal ideas.

3. Below is the current status of several projects:

a. The “Ecology and Natural Resources” MoU was approved by CUWL in January. Work on this project is continuing.

b. The committee approved the development of a MoU regarding a “Wisconsin Land Inventory (Bordner Survey)”. This project would consist of approximately 1,500 maps, created in the 1930s and 1940s that document land use and land resources in the state. The MoU should be ready soon.

c. Work has started on a MoU for the American Suzuki Institute project.
