Advisory Committee

November 12, 2002

Background

As recommended by the Task Force on Strategic Directions for Digitizing UW Library Collections and accepted by the Council of UW Libraries (CUWL) at its meeting on April 27, 2001, Ed Meachen, associate vice president, UWS OLIT and Paul Moriarty, 2001 - 2002 chair of CUWL formed the UW Digital Collections Advisory Committee on August 3, 2001. The committee has issued three reports to CUWL on October 1, 2001, January 29, 2002 and May 1, 2002.

Members

Rima Apple (faculty representative, UW Madison), Ewa Barczyk (associate library director, UW Milwaukee) Lorie Docken (UW System OLIT), Michael Edmonds (WHS), Laura Jacobs (librarian, UW Superior), James Oberly (faculty representative, UW Eau Claire), Nolan Pope (UWDC Center, UW Madison), Joshua Ranger (UW System Archives Council, UW Oshkosh), and Patrick Wilkinson, chair (CUWL, UW Oshkosh).

Activities Since May 1, 2002

1. Professor James Oberly was appointed to the committee. Dr. Oberly is a member of the faculty at UW Eau Claire in the History Department.

2. Ewa Barczyk replaced Peter Watson-Boone on the committee.

3. The committee met in Madison on July 12.

4. Belgian American Project went into production (“live”) as of November 5, 2002. Demonstration and discussion today by Joshua Ranger. (It should be noted that the UWDC AC and Center has learned a great deal from this project.)

5. Pioneer Experience Project (phase I & II) is moving into production soon. Work is going forward on phase III of the project, which includes African American and American Indian voices as well as material from UW Eau Claire. Demonstration and discussion today by Joshua Ranger.

6. Aldo Leopold Project was approved. Work on the project is in progress. It will likely go into production by the end of 2002. The proposal from UW Madison calls for the digitization of finding guides and selected images for this collection housed in UW Madison's Archives. Nolan Pope will provide an update on this project.

7. A new UWDC Center website was created it will be linked to the UWDC website. The site also includes information and documentation for requesting funding from the UWDC AC for digital projects.

8. Future action. Before the next CUWL meeting, the committee will work to complete all outstanding projects and start a concentrated effort to solicit and implement new proposals for the UWDC.

9. No action requested from CUWL at this time.

Some Issues for Consideration

· The committee would like all library directors and their staff to consider submitting digital projects for UWDC funding.

· Please be supportive of the time needed by staff to work on these projects if your library or staff member becomes a “project owner.”

· Please provide us comments on the web site or projects. Feedback provides us the best avenue to learn and improve.

· Are there other types of digital projects that the committee should explore for future UWDC projects?
