Activities
1. The Committee met in Madison on December 10, 2003. Major topics of discussion included:
Desire2Learn—Pat Fellows provided the committee with a description of
the D2L course management software and Shirley Hensch from UW Colleges gave
a demonstration of how D2L is used in her online Psychology course. Areas of
discussion included SCORM, IMS standards, coordinating our work with the UWS
D2L integration team, and how to provide library connections, content, and services
within D2L. Over the covering months, and in preparation for our May 2004 report
to CUWL on this issue, priorities for the RCC include:
• learning how to use the D2L software
• determining what content could be shared across UWS libraries
• developing scenarios for library content and development
• inventorying what content could be shared
• working to get campus acceptance to have a library link on the front
(login) page of each campus D2L page. The RCC recommends that each library works
with their local LTDC rep to develop this link on the campus D2L page.
CUWL D2L Web Site—Tom Murray described the development of the new CUWL web site. Reference Coordinators will use the site as the main vehicle for discussing the issues outlined above related to library integration with D2L. Each reference coordinator has been provided access to the site, and we began our discussion of D2L issues in January.
Role of Reference Coordinators in possible implementation of electronic resource management system—a number of decision points related to the implementation of cross-linking and federated search software that may involve reference coordinators were reviewed and discussed.
Virtual Reference—Virtual reference services, including the AskWisconsin consortium, statistics, staffing, scheduling, and the need to stay informed of other live help products were discussed. Those UW libraries continuing in the AskWisconsin consortium will continue to evaluate this pilot project during 2004.
2. The Reference Coordinators will meet with the Collection Development Committee
to review and make recommendations related to the shared electronic resources
collection. That meeting is being planned for March 2004. CDC representatives
Joan Robb and John Jax, RCC representatives Valerie Malzacher and Ed Van Gembert,
and UW-System representative Paul Moriarty will meet via conference call on
February 5 to plan the joint meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie Malzacher
