CUWL Executive Committee Meeting

Present: Joe Jax (chair), Bob Carmack, Anita Evans, Paul Moriarty, Patrick Wilkinson and Lorie Docken

  1. The meeting was called to order at 10:30 am.
  2. CUWL’s February meeting schedule.
  3. The tentative schedule and format for the February 13 and 14, 2001 CUWL meeting was set:

    February 13

    8 am to Noon CUWL members participate in WLA’s Library Legislative Day.

    1 PM to 5 PM CUWL Business meeting. (Pyle Center)

    5:30 PM to 7 PM Dinner. (Pyle Center)

    7 PM - Speaker and Discussion, "Changing Nature of Academic Libraries: issues, challenges and opportunities."

    February 14

    8 am to 10 am Group discussion and brainstorming on the changing role of academic libraries. (Pyle Center)

    10 am to 1 PM CUWL Business meeting continued. (Pyle Center)

    A block of rooms has been reserved for the meeting at the Howard Johnson Hotel on February 12 and 13.

  4. Speaker for "Changing Nature of Academic Libraries . . ."

The Ex. Committee discussed several possible speakers and discussion leaders. After a thorough discussion, six librarians were identified as possibilities. They were:

    • Jim Neal, director of Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins,
    • Betsy Wilson, associate director, University of Washington Libraries (ACRL president-elect & recently named director at the University of Washington).
    • Carla Stoffle, dean of libraries, University of Arizona.
    • Bill Potter, director of libraries, University of Georgia.
    • Betty Bengtson, director of libraries, University of Washington Libraries.
    • Mary Reichel, library director, Appalachian State University.

The Ex. Committee will be looking for a speaker who can address the changing role of academic libraries. The group it trying to identify a dynamic and challenging speaker to bring forth futuristic issues, challenges and opportunities. Jax will send this list to CUWL directors for reaction. The Ex. Committee will need to arrange a speaker promptly.

  1. Miscellaneous Issues
  • CUWL’s April meeting will be on Thursday and Friday, April 26 & 27, 2001 in Platteville. It will run from noon on the Thursday through noon on Friday.
  • The group discussed the meeting with Jane Burke of Endeavor on January 5, 2001. During the morning session a small group of System representatives, CUWL members and LAMs will talk with Endeavor. For the afternoon session, all CUWL directors and all LAMs are invited to attend. It was noted how important it was to clearly document problems with Endeavor and send those incidents to Jax.
  1. The meeting adjourned at 11:30 am.
