Minutes
LTCC Teleconference

October 12, 2010

Attendance:  Jim Lowrey (UWM & Chair), Quinghua Xu (UW-Parkside), Felice Maciejewsk (SYS), Deb Nordgen (UW-Superior), Tim Salm (UW-Whitewater), Sue Lindahl (UW-Stout), Mitch Lundquist (UW-Madison), Maccabee Levine (UWO), Terri Muraski (UWSP) Katie Sanders (UW-Colleges)

Update of CUWL meeting in Superior (draft minutes were distributed)

  • Overlap of LTCC and LAMS.  There was agreement and sympathy.  It is up to LTCC and LAMS to keep the channels open.

Authentication –

  • Moving ILLiad off of local barcodes to campus IDs is a priority for many campuses.  Due to the shared ILLiad server, options are somewhat limited.  The current effort to support the library IDs at the UW System IAM project is promising and will be pursued w/ IAM and Atlas
  • Look at InCommon.org – a common framework for collaborative trust in support of research and education.  InCommon is particularly relevant to our current effort with the IAM and other authentication projects, particularly Shibboleth.  It is important that libraries dealing with external sources and commercial vendors become part of the process if possible. As of now UWM and Madison are InCommon members.
  • UWM has tested Ezproxy configured to use Shibboleth and campus single sign-on.

Discovery
Since the earlier CUWL meetings the concept of a shared Discovery solution has increased director support.  All agree that time is of the essence.  Library Directors at the meeting agreed that they would go back to their campus and contact Common Systems members for support as the process moves forward.

CUWL Conference:

  • We do not yet have an overall chair for this conference. LTCC should be able to come up with 5 sessions. Please give Jim Lowrey or Tim Salm suggestions.
  • Initial Ideas:
    • Authentication
    • SFX UStat – perhaps with Collection Development?
    • Felice met with Brian Wilson at DoIT.  She got a tour of the DoIT server room.  An idea is a ‘field trip’.
    • Terri mentioned that Allen Barclay at Madison presented on widgets and embeddable objects at WILS World, as a possible presentation.

Efficiencies - Since last meeting, the following has happened;

  • Felice had a teleconference with Gallileo (GA) staff.  It is very large and comprehensive, covering academics, public libraries and K12 schools
  • CARLI will be contacted by Tim, Felice, and Jim. We will contact Kristine Hammerstrand, Director, CARLI User Services, 217-244-7595
  • We would like to provide a summary of the Georgia and Illinois programs to see what works and what doesn’t work and how the recent economy is affecting their operations.

The next teleconference is scheduled for November 9 at 9 a.m.

The initial efficiency strategy  is to focus on the the following:

    • Models of centralized administration elsewhere that UW libraries and system might further investigate
    • Examples of specific instances in our current environment (SFX, etc.) which illustrate areas of possible cooperation and show where we are now.
    • A discussion of the range of scenarios from centralized --> decentralized and the implications and decision points needed.
  • Jim is collecting and collating some SFX target info for several campuses, to provide a snapshot of how we now use a common tool.
    • Goal is to have a total of 6 campuses
    • Initial observations; looking at 4 campuses, there are over 700 total targets.  While there is significant variety, there are large pools of slightly different versions of the same vendors’ collections, implying that there is room to simplify significantly.
  • Charges for Efficiency – should we be focusing on the other charges such as staff training and assessment?
    • One question would one campus be willing to help out another campus with training, etc.
    • Would a small group of people be willing to come up with survey questions to directors or their designee?  Maccabee, Terri and Mitch will work on this project.
    • Terri reminded us that a few years ago there was an expertise directory on the CUWL Wiki.  Is this worth updating/maintaining?

Other

  • Felice is making campus visits over the next couple months.
