Jana Reed-Steidinger, RCC chair, reported on the discussions
of the Reference Coordinators regarding possible future purchases funded by the
Shared Electronic Collections Budget. Gale’s
Year 1: $145,700 (includes annual access fee)
Years 2 and 3: $104,000 each
Year 4 and following: ca. $45,000.
It was suggested that a systemwide trial use be set up; Lorie will investigate. The RCC selected Historical New York Times as their second choice.
Comparison of Proquest’s Nursing Journals and Ebsco Health Source—Nursing Edition was inconclusive. The Silverplatter and Ebsco interfaces to Biosis were debated. The Silverplatter interface is better designed for biology majors and graduate students, whereas the Ebsco interface is targeted for the general undergraduate.
Paul Moriarty reported on the CUWL meeting held in early October. Library directors have asked that each campus review their implementation of SFX and Metalib in order to achieve a greater degree of consistency in their presentations. The review should include the links to 1) local catalog, 2)ILLIAD/ILL when full text is not available, 3) reference service, and 4) other services. Directors prefer use of consistent labels over the employment of icons for 1) Quick search, 2) Find database, 3) Find e-journal (varied according to contents), 4) Metasearch (directors suggested alternative term “custom search”) and 5) My search. Table view is preferred over the brief view, and they want the “shopping cart” eliminated.
Consistency is important because of large number of students (6,000 in 2003) who transfer between campuses each year, and for the sake of students who visit more than one campus. A familiar look among the libraries’ websites also reinforces the one system-one library concept. Directors suggested a common name for “metalib” be adopted systemwide. When new products and services are implemented, a greater degree of consistency will be expected.
Sylvia Beardsley, CDC chair, reported on their morning meeting. The “last copy” policy adopted in 1999 for print serial volumes was discussed. Richard Reeb will review it and make recommendations for updating it, as needed. In order to assess the level of monograph and serial duplication among system libraries, which is being studied by the Collection Management Task Force, chaired by Eva Barczyk, CDC members will have reports generated from their respective databases. The deadline for the monograph report is October 29, and for the serial data is Nov. 15. The committee spent the remaining portion of the meeting reviewing the list of titles scheduled for renewal (or not) in January.
Lorie Docken will be sending invoices out to each campus on their cost-sharing allocation to the Shared Electronic Collection (SEC). The total amount of the increase to the budget is $100,000. Although there is a projected balance for the SEC of $75,969 for the current fiscal year, if all the resources are renewed next year, the FY 05/06 budget will end in a deficit of about $24,000.
The Board of Regents will include a library funding request in the 2005-07 biennial budget proposal. $6,000,000 will be requested for the Shared Electronic Collection, digitization projects, and for the collections of individual campuses.
The resources on the list for renewal in January were discussed before a vote was taken on each product. Comments/observations included:
ABI/Inform: John Jax did a comparative study of this product and Ebsco’s Business Source Elite. The former features better indexing and is easier to navigate while Ebsco’s product links to more articles in full text.
ACLS History E-book: a mix of old and new titles; purchased through the CIC; usage statistics difficult to obtain from the publisher
ACS Web and Archives: Web product provides access to current plus four previous years; Archives extends access back to the first volume.
Biological Abstracts: Pros and cons of the Silverplatter and Ebsco interfaces, with group evenly divided on preferred data provider. Lorie will check with publisher if all campuses have to use same interface.
Genderwatch: Lorie will contact Proquest about whether we were billed properly for the content received.
MathSciNet: Unique, niche product.
Project Muse: System benefits from new pricing model established by Johns Hopkins—colleges now count as a single campus. Since Duke University Press has pulled out of Project Muse, the Electronic Collections budget may pick up some of the titles. Remaining will have to be licensed by individual campuses.
Web of Science: Since
campuses other than

Paul reported that the Electronic Communications Committee with the technical support provided by the Wendt Library staff has recently launched CUWL’s new website at: http://uwlib.uwsa.edu. Committee members were encouraged after self-registering to use it for setting up chat sessions, sharing documents, etc.
Lorie reminded the groups announced that
UW Ssystem
is funding a pilot during the current fiscal year that will pay document
delivery fees charged by the British Library for articles not held by any UW
library which they supply.
There will be another joint meeting of CDC and RCC next spring to discuss the July 2005 renewals.
Meeting adjourned at .
